No Plastic Bands

No Plastic Bands was planned as a series of gigs to be supported by Swindon musicians with a passion to deal with plastic pollution. Swindon musicians kindly supported the campaign in a couple of vibrant, community-hubs.

There was an eclectic selection of music for the first gig in The Castle: Canute's Plastic Army, Palm Rose and Francis the Farmer provided the good vibrations. The second gig was more along traditional and modern folk lines. Talis Kimberley, The Bellflowers and S'Go played the second gig at a full Beehive on a Friday night. Thanks to all the performers for giving their time and energies. Thanks to The Beehive and The Castle for hosting us. And many thanks to James Osborn for producing the excellent fliers.

The name for Canute's Plastic Army comes from the the story of King Canute, the Danish king of England. He was so beloved that many people thought he was a God, which he refuted. One day he became so fed up with this, that he took a group of people to the sea-edge, and proclaimed that, if he was a God, he would be able to control the sea to bring back his crown. He put his crown in the sea and it floated away. He was trying to prove there are things we are all subject to, including nature. An aptly-named band to perform for our campaign.

The nights provided some good local entertainment, raised awareness of plastic pollution and the campaign, and raised some money to help the cause.
