Growing South Swindon Community
The organisation's key aims are to transform spaces and build community. Our work has helped transform Cambria Bridge from a run-down area known for drug dealing to an area that is well-loved and used by all! We do projects such as the bean patch on the canal path and fruit bushes at Cambria Bridge, which provide free organic food grown by the local community for the local community.
Thanks to South Swindon Parish Council for installing raised wooden beds which we used for planting. The mud kitchen at Cambria Bridge has been so popular with kids, more so than the main playground!
Each year South Swindon Parish Council kindly enter local organisations into It's Your Neighbourhood by the RHS. Growing South Swindon Community's work is entered as part of the South Swindon In Bloom entry. We achieved a level 4 for our first year of operation in 2022.
We have a plot at Westcott Rec' allotments where we grow vegetables which are donated to the local community.
Growing South Swindon Community can help achieve key aims of Plastic Free Swindon. For example:
- Growing local food reduces the need for (plastic) packaging and transport. Vehicles are a major driver of plastic production, accounting for 9.6% of demand in Europe in 2019. Tyres are a major source of plastic pollution, for instance.
- Areas which look nice and are cared for are treated in kind and littered less.
Events are on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month from 10am-12pm. For more info and to get involved:
