Historical Tour Litter Pick
Firstly, a huge thanks to everyone who has taken part in the litter picks that we've organised around Swindon!!
Sunday 6th October 2019, 2-5pm.
We co-organised this litter pick with a twist with Eastcott Community Organisation. The Eastcott area is steeped in history. Local historian Andy Binks, of The Swindon Society, provided us with some interesting information about the area, past and present. We looked at a picture of Dixon Street taken in the early 1900s from the alleyway below and parellel to Dixon Street. Stark contrast from the beauty of nature, rolling countryside, to the heavily populated and developed town that it has become.
We covered a good area including the park by Savernake Street Social Hall, and alleyways that attract rubbish of all sorts, large and small. We finished the litter pick in Radnor Street Cemetery, resting place to 30,000 people! We looked around the old chapel in the centre of the cemetery, which has memories of Swindon’s past, especially the world wars. In the warmer months, Swindon Society put on tours of the cemeteries, including Radnor Street, where they share information on the lives of people buried in the cemetery. Details of cemetary tours are posted on the doors of the chapel at the centre of Radnor Street cemetary.
At the end of the event, we had refreshments and conversation care of Eastcott Community Centre. Thanks to all involved for making a great day!
