Dear [representative],

A system of zero waste using natural materials is good for the environment, local economies, and the health and happiness of people and animals. Vitally, it would compliment the waste hierarchy; prioritising reduction, reuse, remanufacture and repair.

To the contrary is our current system of plastic recycling, incineration and landfill. It causes disease, suffering, climate change, mass extinction and furthers inequalities.

Wealth and income inequality are shown to increase social and environmental ills including mental illness, crime, pollution, climate change, teenage pregnancies, obesity, and life expectancy. I point you to the work of Danny Dorling, professor of Human Geography at Oxford University, especially his book, ‘The Equality Effect’:

A report for 2021, ‘Zero waste and economic recovery: The job creation potential of zero waste solutions’ provides statistics which shows how beneficial a system of zero waste can be:

  • Repair creates over 200 times as many jobs as landfills and incinerators.
  • Recycling creates over 50 times as many jobs as landfills and incinerators.
  • Remanufacturing creates almost 30 times as many jobs as landfills and incinerators.

Other reports show the economic benefits of a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) compared to recycling:

I am asking you to support the implementation of a system(s) of zero waste in Swindon. I look forward to you response.

Kind regards,
