In 2024 we signed up to the Plastic Free Communities campaign by Surfers Against Sewage. We hope it will help galvanize and build efforts to reduce plastic use and pollution in Swindon.
The campaigns has 5 key objectives:
-
Community Allies
Community allies play a vital role for Plastic Free Swindon. They ensure that as many people as possible are aware of the plastic crisis and how to take action to reduce it. Our target is at least 110 community allies.
-
Business Champions
To become a business champion, a business must remove at least three single-use plastic items and put a plan in place to identify and tackle the rest. Our target is at least 46 business champions.
-
Community Action & Events
At least two community events organised and made open for all to attend, in one calendar year.
-
Steering Group
Local group of stakeholders to meet at least twice per calendar year to discuss the progress of Plastic Free Communities locally; agreeing and setting direction, meeting objectives, and completing the application for Plastic Free Communities Approved status. The group must contain a local council representative. With a population > 100,000, a flagship business must also be a member.
-
Local Governance
The local council responsible for your community passes a resolution supporting the plastic free journey, committing to taking action itself and supporting plastic-free initiatives within its catchment. The motion to the council must include these three things:
- The council will lead by example and remove single-use plastic items from its premises and operations.
- The council will encourage plastic-free initiatives in the area, promoting the campaign and supporting events.
- A representative of the council to be on the Plastic Free Community Steering Group.

- Stop using single-use plastics and become a plastic-free accredited school.
- Become a Community Ally of Plastic Free Swindon.
